Scientists in Bali find what could be the world’s largest coral colony

Coral restoration nonprofit Ocean Gardener announced that Indonesian marine biologists had measured a Galaxea astreata coral colony in Nusa Penida, a popular diving site, at 58 meters wide by 71 long (190 by 233 feet). It’s also 10 m (33 ft) deep and covers an area of more than 4,000 m2 (43,000 ft2). Read more here.

Newfoundland aquaculture industry pushing back against proposed marine protected area

The Newfoundland Aquaculture Industry Association (NAIA) and Cooke Inc. CEO Glenn Cooke are pushing back against a proposal for a new marine protected area (MPA) they both say will negatively impact the aquaculture and fisheries industries in the Canadian province. Read more here.

Anti-whaling activist Paul Watson freed from prison

Police arrested Watson due to an Interpol notice issued by Japan. Tokyo was seeking extradition over charges relating to alleged “ship trespass” and “accomplice to assault” in 2010. There were fears that he could face up to 15 years in prison. Read more here.
